Coursework Stage 2 Planning

Stage 2 Planning

Describe your idea for the brief:
I am going to make and indie/rock magazine aimed at readers 15-30, I will use most of the major conventions e.g. masthead and main image. The images I will use will be of the band I am a member of. I will make sure I get good images of good quality for my magazine.
Genre/ sub genre:
The genre of my magazine will be of the indie/rock genre. Some bands I am inspired by are people that I created my inspirational texts blog post about, here:  (http://lawrencenormanasmedia.blogspot.co.uk/2013/10/inspirational-texts.html) they are bands like arctic monkeys and the vaccines.
Target audience:
The target audience of my magazine is both males and females aged 15-30 who are in the ‘indie/indie rock scene’ who are generally people who go to festivals like Leeds etc, and people currently in the ‘mod’ and others scene.
Major conventions:
I will use are; a masthead across the top of my page, with the main image over the top of it in places, the main cover line along the bottom. I will have subheads along the right hand side of the page and Essential info in the bottom right
Original images:
My images are going to of the band I am a member of. I will have images of guitarists, instruments, and shots of the microphone and the singer as the main image.
Potential difficulties/ Plan B:
Finding the right font I want (having a backup font)
Getting images that are good quality, look good and being the right size. I will make sure I have backup plans to get good images.

The publisher I want to produce my magazine will be PPA as they have a gap in their own market for and indie rock music band. And as a huge prestigous magazine it would help gain most buyers

Photoshop skills development

To begin with I edited my photo to change the colour scheme to black and white. I then put a black surround around the picture. I then created a duplicate layer. and tried to use the magic wand tool to cut out jarvis cocker. but as the colours are black and white, I had to zoom in and rub out the surround for him so that I could put in my text, and have his figure over the top of the text.

I also did the same thing with this article I created, but with an extra image on the right:

What have I learned from looking

at last year’s student work?

That I need the picture to look professional, in the photos, the fonts, the layout and design to give me top marks in this assignment. I know after looking at other students work that having a good colour scheme and using all the conventions are essential

How will I apply this to my own work?

I will make the pictures to look professional, in the photos, the fonts, the layout and design to give me top marks in this assignment. I will use a good fitting colour scheme to the genre, and make sure I use all the essentials my magazine needs.

Coursework Stage 1 Proposal

Magazine Planning

The type of magazine i am going to make is an indie/rock magazine
It is going to be called: Indie-Pendant
The target audience of my magazine will be both males and females from ages 16-30
The target audience attitudes and interests will be obviously people of the indie/rock scene, so currently at the moment it is the mod's and rocker style coming back around.
My magazine will be for sale in supermarkets, corner shops, newsagents and music shops.
On the cover I will have to include; a barcode, the price, the issue number, the date in which it released.
The selling point of my magazine will be the status of the magazine, the quality of the articles, due to who they are about (massively famous persons) and the humour within the articles.
The theme of my article will be of the band "Black Lines"
The image on my front cover will of the lead singer of the band.
The Image inside will be a large picture of the full band.

Preliminary Task Front Cover + Contents

This is my preliminary task, I have made a front cover and contents page for a college magazine on publisher. I followed mt flat plan to create it, and photos I took before hand. Here they are.

In my preliminary task I feel that there are several things in it which could be improved. Things like; the colours of the fonts (i should make them the same and following the colour scheme. The size of the images need changing too. I have made them too stretched and I will sort this in my real task.
I also want to change the background colour as a light lilac does not look proffesional. although bland, a white background will look a lot more proffesional. I want to also changed how the page number looks, as it doesnt look proffesional at all.

Preliminary Flat Plan

The images above are flat plan of a contents page and front cover of my magazine. I have designed these as I have, because i think that the features I want to make stand out, will stand out the most due to where I place them, and how large they are etc. The main image is what will grab the readers attention first, then the mast head, and then the other heads and essential info etc.

Inspirational Texts

I have been doing some research about what type of music I want to feature in my magazine, I used YouTube to find some songs and videos that I might want to use in in my magazine. but generally, I have picked to stick around the "Indie" genre.

I have been thinking about what type of music i am wanting to put into my magazine, I have kept the idea of an idea genre, and then I created a mood board showing all the type of bands I want in my magazine.

Magazine Cover Deconstruction

This is my Magazine Cover Deconstruction. I did this as a part of my research towards making a magazine cover myself. I produced it on power point, and embedded I it into SlideShare.

Magazine Cover Key Features

Masthead- The main logo/title of the magazine, usually in the top left of the page. The purpose of the masthead is to identify the magazine, and make it stand out to the audience.

Main Image- The main image is usually a picture relating to the main coverline, and usually by the type of picture, the audience can see what type of magazine it is.

Main Cover Line- The title of the main article, relates to main image, and is the selling point for that issue of the magazine

Sub Head- A small description of the main coverline. This gives out a small amount of information about the main coverline/article, without having to open the magazine. Sometimes it is used to tease the reader, and make them want to rad more of the article.

Coverline- The titles of other, smaller articles, that may draw the attention of the audience, to try and draw the audience to buy the magazine, aswell as the main coverline.

Essential Info- Several things, including; Date, Issue number, Price, Website, Barcode. these are things that the buyer will want to know. whether it is the latest issue, and how much it is.

Foundation Portfolio Brief

Print Brief

I will complete two linked tasks. The set brief is as follows:

Preliminary exercise: using DTP and an image manipulation program, produce the front page of a new school/college magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close-up plus some appropriately laid-out text and a masthead. Additionally you must produce a mock-up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate your grasp of DTP.

Main task: the front page, contents and double page spread of a new music magazine (if done as a group task, each member of the group must produce an individual edition of the magazine, following the same house style).

All images and text used must be original, produced by me, minimum of four images.
